Crate Training
Dogs are den animals and usually enjoy having a small space to themselves. Sometimes, this does not come naturally in a new home. To help your dog to enjoy spending time in their crates, you can begin by feeding your dog in their crate. Keep some enrichment toys in the crate, like a stuffed kong. Have your pup take naps in the crate. The crate should be a happy place; never use the crate as punishment.
Using a marker
When dogs are learning, they need to know what action is getting them the reward so they can do it again. Using a marker, like a clicker or marking word (like "yes!") can help your dog know what they did correctly. For example, if you lure your dog into a sit, you can click or say "yes!" the instant their bottom hits the floor. This noise lets them know that you want their bottom on the floor. Then, the treat follows shortly after as the reward.
To get a dog used to a marker, take 10 pieces of breakfast or dinner kibble per meal. Just mark and treat 10 times! Your dog will begin to realize that this noise means a treat is coming!
